Texas Republican Party Positions on Sharia Law and the Islamization of Texas at the 2026 State Convention

The 2026–2028 Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priorities, approved by delegates at the state convention in Houston on June 13, 2026, include a priority titled “Don’t Sharia Our Texas.” These priorities are the party’s ranked directives to elected officials, drawn from the broader platform and resolutions process.

The Republican Party platform states:

“Texas government must stop Sharia Law by declaring that Sharia Law is an incompatible, seditious, subversive, competing enemy system in opposition to the Texas and U.S. Constitutions, and that its advocacy or implementation is a by seditious criminal act, deserving disqualification from public, military, and law enforcement service, and justifying criminal punishment, denaturalization, and deportation.”

It then lists specific measures:

  • Immigration reforms: Formally request that the federal government denaturalize and deport advocates of Sharia Law.
  • No taxpayer funds: Prohibit taxpayer funds to any entity or program that promotes or advocates allegiance to a foreign legal system such as Sharia Law that conflicts with the Texas or U.S. Constitutions. Public schools and taxpayer-funded institutions would not be permitted to provide meals or services to comply with Sharia Law.
  • Sharia-compliant developments: Stop any residential or non-residential development that advocates the application of Sharia Law or discriminates against those who do not submit to it.
  • Funding prohibitions: Stop religious and educational institutions in Texas from receiving funding from hostile foreign or domestic sources affiliated with any organization that advocates Sharia Law or has been designated a Foreign Terror Organization (FTO) or Transnational Criminal Organization (TCO).
  • Enforce and expand laws: Enforce Texas sedition laws against advocacy of Sharia Law, and rigorously enforce existing laws against what the priority describes as aspects of Sharia Law (terroristic threat, female genital mutilation, animal cruelty, domestic violence, rape, polygamy, and pedophilia). Modify statutes to explicitly reference Sharia, expand the Attorney General’s jurisdiction to prosecute, eliminate taxpayer assistance to women “who in reality are wives under Sharia Law,” and address fraud related to Sharia-compliant financing.
  • Expand American Law for American Courts: Broaden the existing American Law for American Courts statute (HB 45, 85th Legislature) and adopt a Texas Domestic Terrorist Organization Designation Act, including a private civil cause of action under RICO-style provisions for victims of terrorism.

Related party actions include a non-binding March 2026 Republican primary ballot proposition (“Texas should prohibit Sharia Law”), which received roughly 95% support among voters who answered it, and party resolutions supporting designation of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations. Those resolutions cite Muslim Brotherhood documents describing a “civilization-jihadist process” aimed at undermining Western civilization and imposing Sharia, and link CAIR to the Holy Land Foundation terrorism-financing case.

The phrase “Islamization” of Texas is used in connection with concerns about parallel legal or cultural systems, Muslim residential developments, and related immigration and institutional issues. Gov. Greg Abbott and other officials have publicly called for a ban on Sharia law in Texas, consistent with the priority.
