President, Conservative Republicans of Texas
Governor Abbott needs to provide leadership for the Christians and conservatives in Texas and challenge liberal, RINO Speaker Joe Straus’ efforts to kill Senate Bill 6 (SB 6), the bill which keeps perverted men and boys, including registered sex offenders, out of women’s and girls’ bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms. The bill was overwhelming passed by the Senate 21 to 10, but now sits on “King” Straus’ desk gathering dust. It is now time for Governor Abbott to speak out for us publicly and demand for a vote on SB 6 by the Texas House.
My friend Rev. Dave Welch, President of the Texas Pastors Council, describes how we got here, stating the following:
“On March 28 a conference call was held by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and a number of the well-known major mega pastors in Texas, coordinated by the Texas Pastors Council in partnership with Vision America. On that call the Lt. Governor gave his assessment of the status and challenges of moving SB 6, the Women’s Privacy Act, through the House of Representatives due to the opposition of Speaker Joe Straus. The assessment then was that it was going to take very clear leadership from Abbott to overcome Straus’ tyrannical control over the House in order to have SB 6 voted upon by the Texas House.
Following that call, one of the strong mega pastors called Governor Greg Abbott to determine his level of support and action behind SB 6. The Governor was “very optimistic” and assured this pastor representing our team of pastors, including the mega pastors, to be patient, that after Easter and the budget a bill would move through the House. After Easter, SB 6 was still not assigned to a committee but
HB 2899 by Rep. Ron Simmons became “the bill” and a public hearing was held on April 19.
During this time, Governor Abbott again assured us through this mega pastor, serving as our liaison, that he was “confident” that the bill would move. We began to hear that same phrase from other sources, yet day after day, SB 6 sat as an orphan and HB 2899 gathered dust in committee. Sixteen working days and two and a half weeks later, on the day after bills die in committee, there they dwell still imprisoned. It brings to mind a truth:
“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:15-20)”
It is now clear that Straus’ lieutenant and puppeteer, Chairman Byron Cook, has chosen to take responsibility for killing a vote on this bill. Why is he so afraid of allowing our duly elected representatives to simply vote? Remember, it was a small, moderate/liberal element of the Republican Caucus and the entire 65 member Democrat caucus plus 11 liberal Republicans that initially elected Joe Straus speaker in 2009. As Rev. Welch appropriately asks, “Why now, with 96 Republicans in the 150 seat House, can’t a simple bill to keep biological males out of women’s and girls’ restrooms, showers and locker rooms in schools be passed?
How many Republican members of the Texas House does it take to go to the microphone to make a motion to ‘set aside all necessary rules to take up and consider SB 6? One to make the motion, one to second it. Then, only 76 to pass the motion and ultimately the bill. Will any Representative step up to the microphone to lead that charge and prove himself a champion in the mold of David?”
It appears clear to all unbiased observers that the Republican House needs to find new leadership and many of its members need to be replaced. In the 2018 Republican Primary, we will deal with these folks.
Governor Abbott, you have the bully pulpit. You are our leader. We now need you to lead. This is your moment in history to make a difference!
We are asking every activist, pastor, grass roots leader, and citizen, to call Governor Greg Abbott’s office at (512) 463-2000 and ask Governor Abbott to take the lead and call for a Special Session of the Texas Legislature if the House fails to vote on SB 6. Also, please share this message with your email network and circulate it through your social media contacts.
“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes.” (Proverbs 21:1) Pray that God would work in Governor Abbott’s heart and cause him to take a courageous stand to pass SB 6.
All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.
“Through God we shall do valiantly, and it is He who will tread down our adversaries.” (Psalm 108:13)
Continue to fight the good fight of faith. Let’s press this battle to its successful conclusion!
