Republican Legislators Water Down Texas Heart Beat Bill

Republicans Want to Water Down the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill

— Steven Hotze, M.D, Andy Schlafly, J.D.

Dear Fellow Pro-lifers,

In a shocking betrayal of the unborn, Republicans have deleted “life” from the misnamed Life of the Mother Act (Texas SB 31, HB 44) so that this proposed law would no longer be concerned with saving the life of the mother. Instead, SB 31 would unleash the scourge of abortion once again on Texas.

Our current Pro-Life law, the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill, was upheld last year by the Texas Supreme Court. It is the strongest Pro-Life legislation in the country. The only exception is to protect the life of the mother, but a group of Democrats and Republicans are trying to expand this exception so that an abortionist can kill an unborn baby whenever he wants to.

Section 3 of SB 31 (HB 44) seeks to remove the requirement that an abortion be allowed only if there is a “life-threatening” physical condition caused by the pregnancy. As everyone who defends the unborn knows, removing the limitation of “life-threatening” means giving carte blanche to abortionists to kill unborn babies for hire.

Nowhere else is a business allowed to be its own judge, yet Senate Democrats and Republicans are trying to delegate authority to an abortionist to decide for himself when to perform an abortion. It is a betrayal of the Republican Pro-life position that Republican Texas State Senators are going along with this pro-abortion push by Democrats to water down the Texas Heartbeat Bill.

SB 31 crosses out multiple references to “life-threatening” from the current law, the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill, and replaces the restriction on abortion to allow it whenever there is a mere “medical emergency,” meaning almost anything an abortionist wants under his “reasonable medical judgment.” The “medical judgment” of abortionists is to kill unborn babies, so why are Republicans granting them more authority?

Don’t be fooled by pro-life organizations that reportedly support this bill. No defender of the unborn would support allowing abortion without proof of a “life-threatening” condition, as the Texas Heartbeat Bill law now requires, but SB 31 and HB 44 would remove this requirement.

Memorandum to Texas Republican Legislators Re: Watering Down the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill

Dear Republican Legislators,

I am not going to tell you that Republicans don’t need to compromise with the pro-abortion Texas Medical Association and the pro-abortion Demon Rats by promoting SB 31 and HB 44 which water down the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill. You will have to decide that for yourself.

Texas has the best pro-life legislation in the country, the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Bill, and it has been upheld by the Texas Supreme Court. Please consider leaving it well enough alone.

I know that Dan Patrick and some Republicans are fearful that the Demon Rats will use our Republican Pro-Life position against us in the 2026 elections, like they did against Trump. Trump stood his ground and he won. No matter what some Texas Republican legislators are trying to do to prevent this, by compromising with the pro-abortionists and Demon Rats to water down the Texas Heartbeat Bill, it is a fool’s errand. The Demon Rats will still attack us on our Pro-Life position. So let’s stand strong!

Let’s trust God and stand proudly and proclaim that we protect the unborn from being murdered by the death cult of the abortionists and Demon Rats.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and discipline.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭7‬)

Here is a post that I received from Operation Rescue regarding SB31
and HB44. The grassroot Christian conservatives are distressed about this compromise position.

Support The Woman and Child Protection Act and Stop the Abortion Industry’s Underground Operations

– John Seago, President, Texas Right to Life

Sen. Bryan Hughes has introduced The Woman and Child Protection Act (Senate Bill 2880) that would allow citizens to sue companies and organizations that work to kill preborn children using abortion pills. Websites, distributors, advertisers, and more could be held accountable if they break the law. The House companion bill is HB 5510.

Sen. Hughes’ groundbreaking bill will protect mothers and babies from abortion pills that are ordered online, sent by mail, or trafficked from other states and countries. When passed, Texas would become the first state to target the abortion industry’s new underground operations.

Elective abortion is illegal in Texas beginning at fertilization, but liberal activists have shifted tactics and are now sending tens of thousands of these deadly drugs straight to homes and dorm rooms.

No other state has enacted effective legislation to save mothers and children from the abortion industry’s evil new business model. Passing this bill would prove that Texans are not satisfied with just closing brick and mortar abortion clinics, but Pro-Life advocates want to save every woman and every baby from abortion pills.

At the point in pregnancy when these deadly drugs are typically taken, the preborn child has her own unique DNA; her heart is beating; her eyes, legs, and hands have begun to develop; she has detectable brain waves; and every major organ system is in place.

Law enforcement struggles to trace the origins of abortion pills when they are sold online or brought in from other states or countries. The Woman and Child Protection Act seeks to fill this gap by adding seven strategic and aggressive legal tools for government officials and citizens to use. For example, the policy would allow Texans to sue internet platforms like Facebook and PayPal if they help sell abortion pills illegally. It also adds harsher criminal penalties for funding abortions and lets the attorney general prosecute if liberal district attorneys try to let abortionists off the hook. This unique approach is how the Texas Heartbeat Act became the strongest Pro-Life law in the nation in 2021.

Please join me in supporting Sen. Hughes’ powerful Pro-Life bill,
SB 2880, that will help us fight back against the new digital abortion industry that is still targeting Texas babies.
