Over the past few weeks, numerous county Republican Parties have taken bold, principled stands against Speaker Joe Straus and his efforts to prevent conservative legislation from passing in the Regular Session and Special Session of the Texas Legislature.  Straus has chosen to align himself with the liberal left and ignore the will of grassroots, conservative activist across the state.  Straus has chosen to oppose conservative statewide leaders, Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, both of whom were elected statewide with a mandate of 58% of the vote.

Whether it’s women’s privacy, school choice, property tax relief, and other priorities of Governor Abbott, Joe Straus has chosen to side with the Democrats in working to kill Governor Abbott’s conservative agenda for the state of Texas.  Straus called Gov. Abbott’s Special Session a “Pile of Manure.”

Unlike Abbott and Patrick, Straus has never been elected to statewide office. If Straus were to run against Abbott or Patrick, then he would be crushed like a grape.  Straus represents one House district out of 150 across the state. He is elected by 76 out of 150 state representatives. Straus’ base support comes from every one of the 55 Democrat state representatives.

Straus is using the mantle of Speaker to kill Abbott’s and Patrick’s conservative agenda for the state of Texas. Their conservative agenda is consistent with the Republican Party of Texas platform and with the will of an overwhelming majority, 58%, of Texans. Straus should realize that elections have consequences. We cannot let Joe Straus obstruct the will of the people of Texas.

Grassroots, conservative activist across the state are hopping mad at Straus. A poll conducted by CRTX News this past June, of 1300 random statewide Republican primary voters, revealed that 68% wanted Straus to be removed as Speaker. Numerous Republican county parties have passed no confidence resolutions and called for their respective state representatives to vote to “Oust Straus.”  For example, Eastland County’s Republican Party  recently  passed a resolution requesting Republican State Rep. Mike Lang of Granbury, who represents Eastland County in the Texas House, to “withdraw all support for the current Speaker Joe Straus, and install a Speaker who will effectively advance the clear 2016 platform directives of the Republican Party of Texas.”  Similarly, the Hood County Republican Party unanimously passed a resolution calling on Representative Lang to “withdraw support for the current Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Joe Straus.”

As reported by Empower Texans, Lang responded in a press release:

“I am glad that County parties from across my district are standing up for what they believe in and understand that Republican priorities are no longer the driving force for House Leadership… I stand with Governor Abbott and his Special Session priorities and I believe it is time for the House Leadership to stop obstructing the process and get these bills passed.”

Wood County’s Republican Party also took a strong principled stance, passing a resolution that calls for a new Texas Speaker “who reflects Texas values in solving problems facing the State of Texas.”

The most notable resolution opposing Straus’ obstructionist tactics came from his own county party.   On July 10th, the Bexar County Republican Party (San Antonio) passed a resolution stating: “We of Bexar County GOP resolve that there should be a change in leadership in the Texas House speakership due to the non-support of the Republican Party of Texas platform by the current incumbent.”

To date, eleven county Republican parties have passed resolutions calling for Straus to be ousted as speaker. The counties include:  Bexar, Hood, Dewitt, Atascosa, Real, Uvalde, Smith, Wood, Van Zandt, Eastland, and Cherokee.

Please work to have your county party join these local parties and pass a similar resolution.  We can no longer allow one man, Joe Straus, to obstruct the will of the people.  It is time for all county parties across the state to pass resolutions that “Oust Straus!”

Contact your Republican state representative on Monday and tell him or her to vote to “Oust Straus” as speaker and pass SB 3 the Women’s Privacy Act, “No Men in Women’s Bathrooms!” and the rest of Abbott’s and Patrick’s conservative agenda during this Special Session.
