Natural Health Section: How Do You Know if You are Perimenopause?

By:

Ladies, now that you’re reaching your late 30’s or 40’s, you may have noticed a change in your monthly cycle along with a few other negative symptoms. You know you’re not in menopause yet, but the sporadic hot flashes, mood swings, unexplainable weight gain and irregular periods are beginning to make you wonder. You may be thinking it’s finally time to figure out what’s going on with your hormones. This can be a confusing and frustrating experience. Let us explain what is happening and share how you can get your body back to feeling good again.

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the 2 to 10 year transitional period of time prior to menopause. It can begin in a woman’s 30s or 40s, lasting anywhere from months to years. It ends at menopause, the point when the ovaries stop releasing eggs, causing the complete cessation of menstrual periods. You may have also heard the term premenopause, and it is essentially the same as perimenopause. They both refer to variable periods of time before menopause and are often used interchangeably.

Perimenopause occurs because of declining ovarian function and a change in your hormones. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone begin to decline. As a result, symptoms such as irregular periods begin to occur. In the last years of perimenopause, the drop in estrogen accelerates. Women are still having menstrual cycles at this point, however, and can still become pregnant, however your period has most likely changed from what it used to be during your 20s and 30s. It may be irregular, either too long or too short, unusually heavy or unusually light. Everyone is different and so are the changes in their periods.

You may be in perimenopause if you are still having your menstrual cycle and have some or all of the following symptoms:
