San Antonio ISD Passes Policy Allowing Boys Into Girls Bathrooms, Showers, and Locker Rooms: Joe Straus, Byron Cook, and Lyle Larson Can Claim a Win for the LGBT Left!
By Jared Woodfill
President, Conservative Republicans of Texas
The San Antonio Independent School District recently voted to approve a new school policy that would allow gender confused boys into girls’ bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms. Arguably, the new policy also allows boys who identify as girls to play on girls’ sports teams. This is what we and many others knew would continue to happen if the Texas Privacy Act (Senate Bill 6, regular legislative session and Senate Bill 3, first special session) were not passed. The Texas Privacy Act was legislation that prevented biological males, including registered sex offenders, from entering women’s bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms. Not surprisingly, parts of San Antonio ISD is represented in the Texas House by the man who singled handedly killed the Texas Privacy Act, liberal Republican Texas House Speaker Joe Straus. After the Texas Privacy Act was killed twice, the LGBT political movement went to work, implementing the San Antonio policy with almost no input from those whose children attend San Antonio ISD schools. This action/strategy was taken from Joe Straus’ playbook-a strategy where you refuse to allow the people or their representatives the opportunity to be heard through their voice or vote, on an important issue that impacts their children.
San Antonio parents, it is time to stand-up and let your voices be heard! The San Antonio policy adds “sexual orientation,” “gender identity,” and “gender expression,”to a list of protected classes. These classes are not currently identified in the law. By adopting the new definitions/classes, the school is required to provide special accommodations for students who are gender confused, i.e., think they are something other than their biological sex. It should be noted that the policy is not limited to students, but also applies to faculty and others employed by the school district.
We cannot let Joe Straus and those emboldened by his conduct win. It is more important than ever that Governor Abbott call another special session to force a vote on legislation that keeps men out of women’s bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
Two men are most responsible for the failure of the Texas Privacy Act, Joe Straus and his chief lieutenant, Chairman Byron Cook. The two liberal Republicans intentionally stopped the Texas Privacy Act from being voted on in the Texas House after it overwhelmingly passed by the Texas Senate and was strongly supported by Governor Greg Abbott. It should also be noted that San Antonio Rep. Lyle Larson would not sign on in support of the HB 46, the House version of the Texas Privacy Act.
The San Antonio ISD policy is another reason why a statewide standard is necessary. As my friend Jonathan Saenz recently concluded, “According to the board meeting video, there seemed to be no substantive discussion of this issue. The notice in the SAISD agenda, released late Friday, Aug. 18, was vaguely worded. After months of heavily covered press conferences and hearings of issues related to schools and sexuality under the Texas Capitol dome, there was only one person who testified before the school board Monday night. This vague notification and fast-track effort certainly makes it look like San Antonio school officials wanted to hide the real details about what they were doing because they know very well how controversial this issue is right now.”
