On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, the Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP) and other pastors and civic leaders from several states held a press conference on the steps of City Hall in Houston demanding that SB 6 be allowed to be voted on and that Speaker Straus be held accountable for blocking SB 6.
You can watch highlights from the press conference here:
During the press conference, Reverend William Owens, President of CAAP, said, “We are angry that our rights as black people who have suffered so much have been hijacked by the homosexual agenda.”
He also said that what Straus was doing was a civil wrong.
“We have too many impostors as civil rights advocates and lawmakers who suppress due process. It’s obvious that Speaker Straus is not siding with women and children on this issue. It’s common sense that men who want to base their gender on their ‘feelings’ and not biology should not be allowed to violate the dignity and privacy of women and girls. It is an intrusion to have our wives, mothers, and daughters exposed in public spaces because of legislators who willfully choose to ignore the will of ‘We the People.’”
Rev. Owens said he would like to meet with Straus to debate this issue.
SB 6 was overwhelmingly passed by the Texas Senate by a 21-10 margin on March 14, however, Straus has not yet referred SB 6 for a hearing.
