Chicago’s notoriously poor handling of gun legislation has left the city with an embarrassing new nickname: Chiraq.
In 1982, the City of Chicago, Illinois conducted a bold, yet foolish experiment: They would band handguns in the city. Of course, 2nd Amendment advocates were furious, as a local government was superseding the Constitution of these United States. Chicago persisted, however, and 35 years later the ban is still infamously in place.
In the three and a half decades since that fateful law took effect, Chicago has become one of the nation’s most dangerous cities. Gun violence and homicides within the city limits are astronomical compared to other locales around the nation, including nearby Detroit. Now, as the old adage about “outlaws and gun” becomes a cold, hard reality in the Windy City, President Trump is looking to intercede on the nation’s behalf.
“Months after taking to Twitter to say he would send in ‘the Feds’ to help reduce Chicago’s murder rate, President Trump’s administration has sent in agents to combat the ongoing violence.
“The Chicago Sun-Times first reported that about 20 additional agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been sent to the city.
“Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmed Friday that the federal government is sending help, while decrying the crime epidemic on the city’s streets.
“‘Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!’ Trump tweeted.”
While the city of Chicago may find the move a bit embarrassing for them, the President knew what needed to be done.
Unfortunately, the absurd law that created Chicago’s massive issues can’t be quickly dismantled either. Even if it were, by allowing more guns into a city whose culture has turned as barbaric as Chicago’s would be maneuver without precedent, given that the nature of Chiraq’s new breed of outlaw is far and away more nonchalant about homicide than any previous clan. Chicago will need rot exorcise their figurative demons before reintroducing common sense gun legislation.
Trump’s move to bring in federal authorities could certainly put a dent in the violence in the short term, given the enhanced police presence and threat of federal prison time. That could provide the spark that the city so terribly requires to hone in on violent thugs before relaxing their foolish and failed handgun ban.
